Vet should see bird's foot rash

My African grey developed a red, sore-looking rash on first one foot, then the other. His feet swelled up slightly for about a day. I used gentian violet (the purple stuff) on it to try to stop it. Can you tell me what might have caused this?

--Rebecca Cummings

Any one of a number of things could have caused your bird's foot rash and swelling. He may simply be hypersensitive to a dirty perch, or one cleaned with a caustic detergent. Or the problem could be more serious, the result of infection, disease, or a circulatory problem, to name a few other possible causes.
