Picture poll

We asked: Does your bird talk?
You said: Does he ever!
And here's what he says...

Agro
AGRO, a sulphur-crested cockatoo, laughs along with owner Lea Gammer and her friends and barks like a dog when he sees a hawk.

BC
SEVERE MACAW BC, owned by Alice and Bill Moran of Las Vegas, uses his "cute" voice to say "bye bye" and a commanding tone for "Come here, step up!"

Goliath
GOLIATH, a hyacinth macaw who lives with Connie Pavlinac of Canby, Ore., favors the conversational opener, "Here, kitty, kitty."

Mandy
WHEN MANDY, a Catalina macaw, says "Let's go for a walk!", owner James Kelly of Junction City, Kansas, knows it's time to head outside to smell the magnolias in his back yard. Mandy also likes to say "I love you, too, I do!"

Nick
NICODEMUS, a senegal who likes to discuss food, once shouted at a grocery delivery person, "Where's my bean?!" He can blow kisses and says "sleepy birdie" when he wants to go to bed, says owner Helen Van Doren of College Park, Md.

Oliver
WHEN HE'S NOT helping decorate the Christmas tree, Oliver, a blue-and-gold macaw, practices saying "hello about 30 different ways, depending on what he wants," says Susie Kidder of El Cajon, Calif. Oliver also can cough like his former owner.

Sambird
SAMBIRD, a Congo African grey, doesn't mind letting owner Gina Bonnell of Morgan Hill, Calif, know that "It sucks to be you!" He's good at managing others ("Get down, bad cat!") and enjoys music ("Sing me a song. La, la, la, la, la.")

Pepper the conure
PEPPER, a sun conure owned by Cindy of Vancouver, has one phrase down cold: "step up".

Pepper the grey
HER TIMNEH African grey Pepper, shown chasing a cockatiel from his cage, clucks like a chicken, quacks like a duck, and inquires, "Binkypoo, where are you?" says owner Candi Kane of Beaverton, Ore.

Oliver
PETEE THE SENEGAL asks "Wassup, girlfriend?" Then she "throws back her head and laughs like her mom," says Vicky Brown of Ottawa.

Picaro
"PICARO WANTS to go bye-bye" means the white-eyed conure wants to go for a ride in the car, says owner Angelika Payan of El Sobrante, Calif.

Regan
REGAN'S FAVORITE phrase is "What are you doing?" says the owner of the cuddly senegal, Kathy Gingras of Martintown, Ontario.

SAMe
INQUISITIVE UMBRELLA COCKATOO SAMe wants to know "What's up?" "What's happening?" and "What's that?", says Kris Ouverson of Dover, Minn.

Tommy
TOMMY HAS A LOT to say about how his household is run. The Congo African grey says "hello" and "bye," scolds the other pets, demands apples and grapes and wakes up owner Susan Hagius of Santa Rosa, Calif., to ask if she's okay.

Willie
A MISCHIEVOUS FORMER OWNER taught Willie the harlequin macaw that "booger" means food. Now when she's hungry, Willie sidles up to Ginger Ambrosio of central Florida, cocks her head and asks, "Gimme a booger?" Willie also laughs and sings off-key.

Zazoo
ZAZOO KNOWS over 100 words, says owner Chris Arnold of Terrace, British Columbia, whose phone conversations are often accompanied by the Congo African grey's mutterings: "Yeah...uh huh...okay...bye!"

Vinnie
WHEN THE KITCHEN light comes on in the morning, Tequila Sepulveda's orange-wing Amazon Vinnie asks, "Is it time for breakfast?" When she answers yes, he asks, "A good-boy breakfast?" When she tells him yes again, he says, "Come on, hurry up!" Vinnie sometimes makes up words, such as "breakfast water" for orange juice.
