Dr. Harris Ask Dr. Harris columnist James M. Harris, DVM, is owner and medical director of Montclair Veterinary Clinic and Hospital in Oakland, Calif. Dr. Harris has served as medical director and chairman of the board for the International Bird Rescue Research Center in Berkeley and has taught avian husbandry at the University of California Extension at Berkeley. He lectures frequently on the human-animal bond and avian breeding, medical and behavioral problems. Dr. Harris' numerous professional honors include California and National Bustad Companion Animal DVM Awards.

Steve Martin Behavior columnist Steve Martin is founder and president of Natural Encounters, Inc., a Florida-based animal-training and presentation enterprise that specializes in showcasing free-flight parrots and raptors at zoos and animal parks. Since 1980, Natural Encounters has presented more than 700 birds from 100 species and more than 25 species of mammals in thousands of arena performances around the world. Natural Encounters also consults with well-known animal parks such as SeaWorld to help them establish their own behavior, care and presentation programs. Mr. Martin has owned and trained parrots for over 35 years. He began his bird-show career at the San Diego Wild Animal Park in 1976 and four years later took his own "The World of Birds Show" on the road, changing the name to Natural Encounters in 1991. Mr. Martin's instructional videos include Understanding Bird Behavior, Training Through Positive Reinforcement, and Parrot Care and Training.
